This past Saturday, Merry Lynn and I had the "privilege" of visiting a youth sports complex -- waiting for a prospect to arrive for a JUS presentation. The reported temperature was 105 (you gotta love Florida!). It was hot and I was sweating just like you would expect from a half-Norwegian who thinks 39 degrees is short-sleeve weather. On top of that, the prospect never showed up. It was disappointing, for sure.
Here's the point. In the business of network marketing, attitude is everything. You absolutely cannot allow yourself to indulge in a negative attitude. People follow people who choose to maintain a good attitude even when things are not going your way. It is one of the characteristics of a leader. And to succeed in network marketing, you must develop the leader in you. And by the way, you don't need to be a born leader -- leadership is a quality you can choose to develop.
P.S. Here is a great book that can help you develop your leadership ability:
"The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You" by John C. Maxwell

A "23 Club" experience
Merry Lynn and N had an interesting experience today. N and J are doing the "23 Club" this week. N had scheduled an appointment to present the JUS product and business opportunity to an individual, allowing a full two hours before the next appointment. It turned out that the prospect was very interested in JUS and the business opportunity it offered. The presentation extended from the expected forty five minutes to an hour to two hours, eventually concluding more than four hours later.
In retrospect, we realized several things.
In retrospect, we realized several things.
- You can't really predict how a given JUS presentation is going to go or how long it will take. So you are better off allowing some extra time for the presentation. This will give you more time to get to know one another and develop that kinship and trust without which you are just two ships passing in the night -- without much chance of impacting anyone. It also gives you more time in case the prospect turns out to be very interested and asks lots of questions.
In this particular case, Merry Lynn and N conversed with the prospect for well over an hour about a wide range of subjects, none of which had anything remotely to do with JUS. But this gave them all a chance to get to know each other better and to develop a genuine level of friendship and trust. And mutual trust is critical to success in any relationship, business or personal. - The "23 Club" is about learning how to effectively share JUS with other people. It is not about following some severely abbreviated format for presenting JUS in a limited time to a zillion people. Just because you are required to present JUS to twenty-three different people doesn't mean you should give every one of those prospects "short shrift" by limiting the time you are willing to spend with each one of them.
- If you invite a prospect to a JUS presentation with the promise that it will take only a very short period of time, you are effectively telling the prospect "This opportunity is not worth your time." Here is what will run through the mind of the prospect: "If this were something the presenter really valued and believed in, they would not feel like they had to cheapen it to get me to listen to them".
- A very short JUS presentation is just about the right duration to present JUS to someone who is totally disinterested in the product. But it is completely inadequate to present the JUS opportunity to someone who is interested.
- If someone is not willing to commit more than a few minutes of their time to hear about JUS, it suggests they are probably not really "looking". It has been said, we are "Looking for people who are looking". By promising that your presentation will take only a few minutes, you are creating a filter that will tend to attract the people who are not open to a new opportunity, while at the same time discouraging people who are really and truly looking for an answer.
- When I first got into network marketing, I was looking for an opportunity to earn more money to help with our financial situation. I would have been extremely disappointed if the presenters only gave me a brief synopsis of the opportunity. I wanted the meeting to go on as long as possible so I could absorb every last detail about the opportunity. I wanted to believe in the product and the opportunity. I wanted the presenters to convince me that this was a good opportunity. So if the presenters had given a quick and shallow presentation, I would have concluded that this was not a serious opportunity because they were not taking it seriously themselves. And I would have kept right on looking for a better opportunity.
- It is highly unlikely that a very brief presentation would have resulted in a new enrollment, much less a commitment to enter the opportunity at the top business-builder entry level. Usually people want a little more information to substantiate the opportunity before they are willing to make a substantial commitment of themselves, their time, and their money. It doesn't take a prospect long at all to make a decision. But even when they have made a decision in their mind, they still want and need supporting information to validate their decision and give them a certain comfort level about it.
Of course you need to be careful not to talk so much that you "talk them into it and then talk them right out of it again". Every person is different, so you need to be alert to when they genuinely want more information (this will be obvious because they will keep on asking you questions) versus your own need to "dump" everything you know on them.

A relaxing but productive evening
This evening I listened to another "Radio JUS" episode (http://www.radiojus.com/past.html). This was Tom Mitchell's interview with Dr. Michael Roizen. Amazing amazing amazing! This is a must-listen. He talks about the impact of diet and other factors on your risk of cancer and other nasty diseases. He is saying you are not a victim of your genealogy, you can make choices in your diet and lifestyle that will have a huge impact on your risk of cancer and heart disease and other diseases.
Incidentally, I listened to the interview on my MP3 player while I was jogging (ok ok, I was mostly walking briskly) -- so it didn't "cost" me any time to listen to the program. If you have more ideas of how to "double-up" activities to make better use of time, let me know - I'd love to hear them.
Tonight I am also spending time running though the flip-chart, so I am more comfortable with it.
And I am composing a few paragraphs of things that I would like to say the next time I present JUS to a new prospect or at a tasting party. The more I think about JUS the more conviction I feel that JUS (the product and the income opportunity) are just what many many people need to turn their lives around. And I am filled with renewed eagerness to tell more people about it!
So tell me -- how did you spend your evening?

JUS Training, Monday Night with Tom Mitchell
Here are my eclectic notes from a training session presented by Tom Mitchell. The notes are somewhat disjointed (perhaps giving you insight into the inner workings of my brain).
Good book: "The Magic of Thinking Big" by Michale J. Schwartz
One secret of Tom's success: just outwork everyone else!
When talking with someone about JUS, the first priority is to establish a level of trust and identify commonalities between you. Listen to the prospect to see what they like to talk about. Ask them a variety of questions (like putting out "bait") to see which topics trigger their interest and get them talking. Listen with genuine interest and ask intelligent questions. You do not need to be an expert in whatever they are talking about. You just need to be able to ask reasonable questions. When a prospect begins to talk about what they love, they lower their defenses.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: I use the term "prospect" for convenience. However, keep in mind that these are actually people, not just "prospects" and you had darn well better have their best interests at heart in all of your dealings with them. You want to get them to "lower their defenses" not to take advantage of them, but so that you can open their eyes so they can actually see and understand the opportunity you are presenting to them -- with total honesty and from your heart.]
You must put the prospect at ease. Initially they will regard you like they would a car salesman approaching them across a car lot -- very negative, very defensive. You must get through this defensive shield or you will have no success whatsoever trying to present JUS to them. Get them laughing if you can. That can help to lower the artificial barrier between you and them.
You can't accomplish anything unless the prospect likes you. Make friends with the prospect, as much as the time and opportunity allow. [We are talking about sincere friendship and esteem for the prospect, not a disingenuous artifice.] A little bit of small talk is a good thing. Don't be in a rush. Just sit back and take a genuine interest in what's going on in their life. You really can choose to be interested in what they are talking about.
If they like you, you can be really bad at doing the presentation and still make the sale. But if they don't like you, even the best presentation will be ineffective.
People say "I can't sell", but actually people are "selling themselves" all the time.
Some people just aren't interested in talking to you. Period. They have no interest in buying JUS and there is nothing you can say or do to change their minds. Try to identify these types of people quickly, in five minutes or so. Don't waste your time (or their's) with these individuals.
Your goal is to get them relaxed enough with you to talk with you about something they are interested in.
PRACTICE BEING A GOOD LISTENER!
JUS is a "golden ticket" for those people who will take advantage of it.
FLIP CHART NOTES
It is really important that you learn the flip chart like the back of your hand. This will free your mind up so you can be thinking of ways to connect with the audience instead of just trying to read what's on the flip chart.
Here are some possible ideas for comments you can make at various stages of the flip-chart presentation. Do NOT attempt to include all of these comments in your presentation. Pick and choose. Go with what works for you.
The notes given here correlate to bullet points on each of the pages of the flip chart. So you should have a copy of the new flip chart in front of you as you read these notes, if possible.
1. TITLE PAGE
2. REALITY CHECK
Stunning statistic: 90% will die of one of these five causes.
Iatrogenesis: You can say something like "I didn't even know what this meant three months ago. Do you know what it means?"
Ask questions in a way that doesn't make people feel stupid.
Note: the $7400 figure includes insurance premium payments.
47% take drugs: "I take Ibuprofen once in a while, do you take anything?"
1/3 of children born since 2000 will get diabetes. "We have four daughters, how about you?"
3. CRAZY THINGS
"I'm not suggesting you eat this way, but..."
Only 30 different foods per week: "What did you have for breakfast this morning? How about breakfast yesterday morning?"
Meat: very acidic
Sugar: can you believe it?! Do you think the kids are a little hyperactive?
60 pounds of french fries: "When was the last time you had french fries?
30 teaspoons of toxins: "Scary!" And we don't even realize we are consuming these toxins (food additives, preservatives, growth hormones, pesticide sprays,...)
4. RESULT - INFLAMMATION AND CHRONIC DISEASE
Regarding the list of diseases: "I'm sure you know someone who has one of these"
The common denominator is inflammation -- silent, internal, hidden, low level. Often due to the food we eat or stress.
The more inflammation you have, the more likely you will get one of these diseases.
5. THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
These are top gun individuals.
Some prospects will say "Well, my doctor says such and such, so I don't accept what you are saying". But the doctors quoted on this page are the recognized international leaders in nutrition and related fields. They are most certainly more qualified to speak on the subject of nutrition than your doctor (don't present it in such a confrontational way!) Instead, say something like "I'm not a nutritional expert, but the people quoted on this page are. They are nationally and internationally recognized experts in their field.
You can read their bios on www.radiojus.com Especially look at Joseph Maroon, Roizen, Furman, Amy. Their books are recommended reading.
You can say "When you eat the same as everyone else, you will get the same diseases as everyone else."
6. SOLUTIONS
The recommended number of daily servings of fruits and vegetables has been increased from 3-5 to 5-7 to 7-9 to 9-13. And now the CDC has created a program that just says "More Matters".
Ask the prospect "I have only had two or three servings today myself. How about you?"
7. ANOTHER OPTION
We're not saying you get all of the fiber that you would from eating the actual fruit. But in terms of antioxidants you are getting the full benefit of 13 servings of fruit.
It cost JUS quite a lot, but JUS wanted to get their product tested by Brunswick Labs (along with the major competitors). You don't see any of the other juice beverage companies publishing their numbers, do you?
Brunswick Labs says there typically is a 15% range of variation in the testing results. This is normal. The potency of food varies from crop to crop, season to season.
8. JUS IS THE SAFEST CHOICE
People can say whatever they want -- hype a product as much as they want. But when you get the numbers from Brunswick Labs, ...
JUS costs two to three times more to produce than the major competing products on the market. Obviously there is a huge mark-up in some of the competing products. Rick Durham is committed to quality and to the long term view of what is best.
9. RESVERATROL COMPARISON
You would have to drink 1/2 gallon of the finest French Pinot Noir (pronounced "Nwah") to get the same amount of resveratrol that is in one ounce of JUS. Pinot Noir has the highest concentration of resveratrol of all the red wines.
So you could drink a half gallon of wine for lunch, or just one ounce of JUS.
FYI: muscadine grapes have the highest resveratrol level of all grapes.
The Japanese Knotweed root is the source of the resveratrol in JUS. It is 98% pure resveratrol.
Some time ago, a well funded carefully planned experiment was performed in which a number of research scientists chose to live in a dome, in complete isolation from the rest of the world. Their goal was to be completely self-sufficient for one year. After a while they realized that their food source was not going to sustain them for the full one year planned duration of the experiment. So, rather than abandoning the experiment, they cut back on their food consumption drastically. As the experiment continued, they realized, through their blood tests, that the severe caloric restriction was having a huge impact in helping to improve their health.
Later on, David Sinclair of Cornell found that restricting the diet of rats by 30-40% caused the rats to live much longer. Then he tested 20,000 different compounds to see if any of them would activate the same gene that had been activated in the rats due to calorie restriction. He found that resveratrol had the strongest effect in activating this same gene.
Buccal delivery (absorption inside the mouth) has been found to be 250 times more effective than swallowing a capsule and digesting it in the stomach. Also, it is important to take resveratrol along with other phytonutrients -- they seem to work synergistically to greatly enhance the effectiveness of the resveratrol.,
Other benefits of resveratrol (as reported in "The Longevity Factor" by Joseph Maroon, M.D.:
After you share this page, give them two options:
1. $500 starter kit
2. $108 starter level
Then ask them which alternative they would like to go with. Then be quiet. Do NOT make it easy for them to say "no". Wait for them to answer, yea or nay. Don't give them an easy way out. Don't say things like "Do you need some time to think about it?"
Don't even mention the "one bottle" option (at least, not for the "23 club").
Somehow get your mindset focused on the $500 starter kit option.
Don't recommend the $299 option -- they will still need to get the $500 option eventually if they want to qualify for all the first-order-bonus levels.
If they reply "I want to think about it", you can reply "I appreciate that, so what is it you want to think about"?
A few more notes -- not directly related to the flip chart.
SUGGESTION: read Tom's "ORAC 101" article five times.
SUGGESTION: read "The Longevity Factor" by Joseph Maroon
During the presentation, ask follow-up questions to let them talk more. But do not "one-upmanship" them!
Ask questions even if you normally would not be interested. Choose to be interested in them.
Organic foods are said to have 30-40% more nutrition content.
From a study in the U.K., an apple in 1960 has the nutrition value of 16 apples in 2006.
JUS is totally devoid of pesticides.
JUS is 90% lower than the U.S. government allowed level for sodium benzoate.
JUS is 50% lower than the Japanese government allowed level for sodium benzoate (and Japan has the most stringent standards for sodium benzoate)
JUS has 23 ingredients that come from 18 different countries.

Sharing JUS briefly with a Doctor.
Today at the office we had a "lunch and learn" session. The theme was how to enjoy better health through nutrition and lifestyle changes. It was presented by a Dr. R. The nutritional recommendations were right in line with what Merry Lynn and I have been learning as we research JUS. So after the presentation I spoke with Dr. R for a few minutes and told him about JUS. I handed him a brochure with our contact information on it and suggested getting together for lunch in a couple of days. I made sure I had his phone number before leaving! Stay tuned to hear what happens next.

Resveratol - Amazing Health Benefits
These are my notes taken from an interview of Dr. Joseph Maroon, conducted by Tom Mitchell for Radio JUS. Dr. Maroon, Tom Mitchell, and Radio JUS are not responsible for the content of these notes.
Dr. Maroon competes in Iron Man.
He is team surgeon for Pittsburg Steelers, and a neurosurgeon.
Omega-3 Fish Oils
He is a big believer in omega-3's
He developed an ulcer from taking so much ibuprofen due to sore knee joint due to his athletic competitions. So he looked for a natural anti-inflammatory,
Fish oil gives him significant relief from joint pain.
2-3 g per day of EPA/DHA – allowed 60% of test sample people to get off prescription drugs for joint pain and arthritis.
NSAIDS can result in silent bleeding within the stomach., 15,000 people die each year from bleeding due to NSAIDS.
VIOX was supposed to be the great savior for anti-inflammation, but it resulted in heart attacks.

The French Paradox
In early 1990’s, epidemiological studies found the French had a relatively lower incidence of coronary artery disease, even though their diet was high in fat and carbohydrates. It was subsequently ascribed to the fact that they drank more red wine having polyphenols, the strongest of which is resveratrol
Amount of resveratrol in a glass of wine is between 1-5 mg (milligrams).
We don’t know for certain how much resveratrol is needed in humans to get the desired benefit as has been observed in animals. Not many studies available yet to show the effects of resveratrol in humans. Study participants have reported improved memory recall, greater energy, help with weight control,
For now we must extrapolate from results in animal tests.
Nutragenomics
This is the study of the effect of food on our genes.
We have about 60 trillion cells in our body.
In each cell there are 25-30 thousand genes.
Genes are like molecular blueprints. They sit there waiting for something to “activate” them (ie. tell them to produce something).
Genes produce about 100,000 different proteins.
Four things that activates our genes for good or bad.
1. nutritional factors
2. exercise
3. environmental factors (air, water)
4. stress
“Transcription factors” tell the DNA what to make and what to do.
So a diet full of vegetables, fruit, lean meat, low in sugar salt white flour, it activates our genes to produce an anti-inflammatory situation in our body.
A Big Mac, soda, cookies, etc. activate our genes to make inflammatory agents in our body.
INFLAMMATION is the common denominator in cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis. This inflammation is silent, hidden in our body.
The control of inflammation through gene activation is at the heart of everything we do, minute by minute.
Book: “The Longevity Factor” by Joseph Maroon
[JUS has about 25mg of resveratrol per ounce.]
What is the only thing we can do to live longer and reduce the incidence of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases of the brain?
One thing we know for sure that will help is “calorie restriction” (by 30-40% of calorie level). This has been known for about 70 years.
About 10 years ago they learned that a specific gene (the certuin or “longevity” gene) is activated during times of stress (calorie restriction, dehydration).
David Sinclair, at Harvard, asked “Is there anything we can do to activate this gene besides calorie restriction”?” He took 20,000 polyphenols and tested them to see if they would activate this gene. The polyphenol compound “resveratrol” caused the greatest activation of this gene. Also quercitin and green tea have the same effect, but not to the same degree as resveratrol.
It is best to take resveratrol with other polyphenols, not just in isolation, due to a synergistic effect.
In the plant and animal kingdom, “That which does not kill me makes me stronger.”
Hence, plants which are able to survive in the wild are much stronger and are more beneficial to humans.
The Japanese Knotweed is a great source of resveratrol. [This is the source of resveratrol in JUS] This plant grows in the wild. The root of this plant contains a very high concentration of resveratrol. The Chinese have used this root in a tea for centuries that enhances memory and longevity.
Through a process of trial and error over many centuries, people in various cultures have discovered the health benefits of various plants.
The White Willow bark is used by the American Indians as a health aid. Coincidentally, aspirin comes from the White Willow bark.
25% of the drugs we use are plant-derived.
Many of the anti-cancer drugs come from plants. For example, Tomoxithin comes from the Taxall plant which is used to treat breast cancer.
Glaxo Smith Kline bet a billion dollars on the expectation that resveratrol will help in the areas of anti-mutagenic effect (ie. anti-cancer), anti-viral, increased insulin sensitivity in diabetics, etc.
They were making this bet based on a number of animal-based studies published in preeminent journals that show the benefits of resveratrol.
Bucol delivery (ie. via absorption through the inside of mouth) is far more efficient, in terms of getting resveratrol into the blood stream, than a pill or capsule.
Resveratrol is a very pungent, strong tasting compound.
Although the level of resveratrol in the blood peaks and decays sharply, the metabolites resulting from resveratrol last longer and are also thought to help.
There are different types of resveratrol “trans” and “cis”. “Trans” is the most active form of resveratrol.
The resveratrol molecule rapidly loses its potency when exposed to air.
There are also synthetic resveratrol, but most studies have been performed using “trans” resveratrol. [JUS uses the “trans” form of resveratrol]
The polyphenols are the compounds that give the red to cherries, purple to grapes. Polyphenols are what give plants their color. And they are very beneficial to humans.
Polyphenols are extremely powerful health-producing agents in our body and potent reducers of free radicals.
A study out of Cornell in 2008 found that dietary supplementation with resveratrol significantly reduced plaque formation in animal brains. That study has huge implications. Alzheimer’s affects 1 in 6 over the age of 65, and affects over half of individuals over the age of 80. The hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease is the deposition of beta amyloid plaque which is toxic to neurons in the brain.
The study showed that in animals, resveratrol helped the re-absorption (ie. dissolving away) of the amyloid plaque. So maybe compounds such as this could lead to being a positive agent in the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer’s.
Many people take a product like JUS for a few days and say “Hey, I don’t feel anything”.
With fish oil, it takes a minimum of two to four weeks for the improvement to become apparent (ie. felt). With other compounds we just don’t know how long it will take to reverse the damage done to our bodies over many years.
At a genetic level, the compounds in JUS are having a significant effect at the gene level even if you do not feel anything.
The most important thing is to make good choices in all four areas
(diet, exercise, environment, stress).

Drama at Office Depot
A couple days ago Merry Lynn and LC went to Office Depot to pick up a JUS flip chart they had printed for us. The technician at the copy center mentioned that T came there frequently to print various JUS materials. So Merry Lynn asked if she had ever tasted JUS and she said no. "Would you like to try it?" "Sure." So Merry Lynn invited her to a tasting party. While speaking with the Office Depot employee, another lady happened to be at the counter. She apologized for eavesdropping and said she was very interested in this JUS stuff. Bottom line -- we have two new people who are very interested in JUS who both said they would come to a tasting party with us. [You did get their contact information, right Merry Lynn?]
Afterwards, LC commented "You're so lucky Merry Lynn. That never happens to me - people out-of-the-blue asking to come to a tasting party". Merry Lynn replied "Well, if you noticed, I'm the one who initiated the conversation about JUS. If I hadn't said anything we would have just picked up our stuff and left and that would've been the end of it." In network marketing you make your own "luck".
"Where's the drama" you ask? Right in front of your nose! A successful network marketing JUS business is made up of zillions of tiny seemingly insignificant events (mini-dramas) that, if you take advantage of them, result in an amazing successful business (and lots of happy healthy people to boot).
